How Can I Maintain Strong Tooth Enamel When I Have Braces?

Posted .

When you have braces, it’s important to maintain strong tooth enamel so you can maintain a healthy smile. However, that might be a tough task if you’re not sure how to keep your enamel in tip-top shape. So, to help you, our orthodontist, Dr. Christopher Liang, has some helpful tips and information for you.

First, have a healthy and balanced diet that is friendly to the teeth. You can do so by avoiding sugary and acidic foods and drinks. Sugar and acid tend to attack the tooth enamel, wear it down, create cavities, and cause enamel erosion. It’s best to stick to foods and drinks that have calcium, like milk and dairy products.

Second, avoid over brushing your smile. Brushing too often and too hard can wear down the tooth enamel. So, make sure to follow your orthodontist’s brushing instructions. It’s also essential to use gentle, soft techniques and a soft-bristled toothbrush while you clean your smile.

Third, use fluoride often. Fluoride is a natural mineral that nourishes your tooth enamel. So, it’s important to expose your smile to it frequently. You can do so by brushing with fluoride toothpaste, rinsing with fluoride mouthwash, and drinking fluoridated water.
