Treating a Loose Wire in Your Braces

Posted .

If a wire comes loose in your braces, it can be somewhat distracting. Depending on where it is situated, it can poke your cheeks, gums or tongue, which can feel annoying. Our orthodontistss are qualified to repair the wire, but you can try a few things that may help you feel more comfortable while you wait.

One thing you can do is move the wire. You may not be able to move it back into its original place, but you can reposition so it does not pester you so much. A good tool for this job is an eraser attached to a pencil.

Of course, the wire may be positioned in a way that it cannot be moved very easily. Rather than get into a losing argument with this wire, you can apply some orthodontic wax to it to reduce discomfort instead. This is not your only option, as small cotton balls and pieces of gauze can also cushion the wire.

Lastly, we strongly recommend that you not cut or treat the wire yourself. The braces are best handled by our orthodontistss, Drs. Liang and Liang, as they have more knowledge and experience in the matter.
